DEPLOYABLE EXTERNAL INSULATION (June 2008)

Deployable External Insulation offers us the possibility of actively modulating building fabric thermal performance. We find that it requires a new mindset to think about buildings in this way. We are all familiar with active solar shading systems that trade a reduction of natural light and view for a heat gain reduction in summer. In hot climates these shutters remain closed when the spaces behind them are unoccupied. This approach must be extended to include similar tradeoffs throughout the year. It becomes possible to target active strategies for zero carbon emission on a space-by-space and building-by-building basis.

DEI also allows us to design buildings that directly exploit the energy that comes directly from the sun in its raw form without taking the downsides of unwanted heat loss when the sun doesn’t shine and excessive solar gain when it shines too much.
